| SAUL BAIZERMAN (1889-1957)
SIGNED BRONZE PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG GIRL (circa 1924).
E. O. HOPPÉ CONNECTION |
Very possibly a likeness of the daughter of the famous portrait and ballet photographer E. O. Hoppé (1878 – 1972). Hoppé was the founder and owner of the Dorien Leigh Gallery, Millais House, London, where Baizerman held his first European solo exhibition in 1924. Image #5 shows Muriel Hoppé, circa 1926.
The bronze has a very dark brown to black patina and is in excellent condition; the wooden stand has very light age and use wear. Signed to the reverse "S. Baizerman". Family owned from inception, the provenance and ownership credentials of this bronze are genuine and guaranteed.

| FINE 1821 DUBOURG COLOUR ROYALTY ENGRAVING |
| A lively and colourful original engraving entitled, "The Queen [Caroline]Returning from the House of Lords". In 1795, the Regent and future King, George IV, had married Caroline of Brunswick. The marriage was far from happy, and during the Regency Caroline lived in Italy. On the accession of George IV she hastened to England to claim the honours due to herself as Queen. However, at the King's request, Prime Minister, Lord Liverpool, introduced a "Pains and Penalties" bill in the House of Lords, to deprive Caroline of her rank and to dissolve the marriage. After a long trial the bill was abandoned to the great joy of the people, who were all on the Queen's side and pitied her for her misfortunes. Parliament afterwards granted Caroline an annuity of £50,000. At the King's Coronation in July 1821, she tried to force her way into Westminster Abbey, but was refused admittance and died, broken hearted, nineteen days later. The engraving shows the triumphant day when the "Penalties" bill was finally quashed. Caroline sits in an open carriage drawn by a team of six horses; she is accompanied by Ladies-in-Waiting and footmen. In the foreground, an enthusiastic crowd greets Her Majesty watched by alert cavalry officers; in the background, an honour guard stands to attention. In the distance are further crowds and mounted officers. | 1970s ABSTRACT BRONZE SCULPTURE BY MICHAEL ALBRECHT |
| A striking and mystical bronze sculpture by Michael Albrecht, a leading West Country jewellery designer, artist and teacher in the 1970s. Created through the lost wax method the piece is inspired by natural organic shapes, fungi in particular. Central to the work is the bulbous organic form with its thought inviting caverns. Supported on a tapering arm and topped with a rugged spire, the surface of the sculpture is reminiscent of roughly carved, weathered rock, and also lichen covered stone; the bronze skin is handled with a cold painted wash in deep gold tones. The piece is mounted on a cleverly pitted, off-rectangular base plate and comes with a heavy Cornish slate stand. The work was obtained directly from the artist in the 1970s and has never been offered before. |

| A 1970s ORGANIC BRONZE SCULPTURE BY MICHAEL ALBRECHT |
| An arresting and inspiring bronze sculpture by Michael Albrecht, a leading West Country jewellery designer, artist and teacher in the 1970s. Created through the lost wax method and inspired by natural organic shapes, the piece is formed as two unequal halves thrusting upwards, cleverly joined with fine thread like braces. Central to the work is the seemingly porous aperture that appears alive with water droplets - the effect created through the use of clear glass beads of varying sizes. The surface of the sculpture is reminiscent of weathered rock and lichen covered stone and is handled with a cold painted wash in deep gold tones. The piece is mounted on a square base plate and comes with a heavy Cornish slate stand. The work was obtained directly from the artist in the 1970s and has never been offered before. |

| c1909 EXPRESSIONIST CARVED TREEN WOODENWARE WOOD BLOCK |
| The wood block is one of the oldest techniques for making prints. The first extant European cuts date from the first quarter of the 15th century. The principle is very simple: the artist first draws the design on a medium-soft piece of wood such as beech or pear, and then cuts away the parts which are to be white in the print with gouges and knives. There was a revival of the art towards the end of the 19th century with painters such as Gaugin, Munch and Vallotton once again seeing its possibilities as a means of original expression. In the early 1900s, the German Expressionists - the item on offer dates from this period - found the woodcut particularly suited to their ideas. Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Franz Marc, Felix Muller and others created prints that are among the the masterpieces of 20th century graphic art. The wood block shown here features an impressive, stylised head and shoulders profile carving of a bearded figure with turban and robes. The piece comes from the collection of the eminent portrait, ballet and travel photographer E.O.Hoppe (1878-1972). Hoppe was an admirer of, and knew, many of the artists mentioned.
