A rare and heavy encaustic tile, impress moulded with a rearing stag on a red earth ground. Condition: tile obtained with frame, condition of edges cannot be verified; corner chip visible bottom right; light surface wear; nothing further found. Circa 1900, back impress marked "Villeroy & Boch Mettlach". Article measured in centimetres and rounded to the nearest quarter inch. Approximate tile size 16cm/6.5in square, frame size 19.5cm/7.75in square.
